: Just wanted to get some opinions:
: would you go with a Pentium or an AMD processor and why?
: As a bonus, Windows XP Pro or Windows 2K Pro?
This may be off topic to post but the AMD processor does not do well with heat. I use 1u rack servers that I build myself. One day I thought I would be smart and buy an AMD processor and board.
I soon found out that the low profile cpu fan I needed to use was not going to keep the AMD cpu cool enough to operate.
I had to buy an Intel CPU and board for the 1u rack and I put the AMD into a small square case so I sould have room for the 4 inch heat sink with the 1 inch high cpu fan on top of it to keep the CPU in good enough shape to run.
The AMD's also don't do well if your cpu fan DIES. In fact you are likely to loose your CPU while an Intel has a better heat sensor that will slow the cpu down and will still operate even if your fan dies.
